Laboratory of Psychoneuroendocrinology
Mahendra Kumar, Ph.D. is a Professor in the Department and is Chief of the Laboratory with a secondary appointment as Professor in the Department of Psychology. His research interests are multi-disciplinary and he has carried out research almost exclusively in the areas of HIV/AIDS as well as substance abuse. His research has been supported by NIDA, NINDS, NIMH and NIA. He and his colleagues have carried out extensive research on HPA axis activity, thyroid, reproductive hormones, and insulin resistance. Some of his studies include various psychological and pharmacological challenges on various endocrine systems. HIs extensive investigation in neuro-cognition among HIV-1 infected individuals was conducted both in the Miami area and in India. He continues to carry out research on endocrines outcomes in HIV-1 infected methamphetamine abusers.
